Since June 2, 2020, heavy rains have flooded 148 rivers in China, affecting 11,220,000 people in 26 provincial cities. Therefore, the Ministry of Water Resources (equivalent to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) dispatched a disaster response team to Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hunan and so on. Currently, there are more than 98,000 dams in China, among which 94,000 dams are small-scale dams.
The representative dam in China would be the Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, Hubei Province, one of the world’s largest dams that the Beijing government built with its national prestige. But this dam has had some problems from the beginning.
There is an interesting article in The Epoch Times dated June 20, 2020 on “Exclusive Interview with Wang Weiluo: the project of the Three Gorges Dam cannot prevent floods. Prepare an escape bag.” By the way, Wang is the author of “The 36 Tricks of the Three Gorges Project.”
In this interview, he stated about problems of the dam as follows.
First, the concrete injection was quick but rough during the construction. Second, the Chinese Communist Party decide to make the dam a exemplary creation, and they invited an Austrian dam construction supervisory company. During the construction process, the company rejected all the reinforced concrete welding work by Chinese workers, but the party dismissed the evaluation by the construction company, saying the examination was a disdain by foreigners to Chinese. Third, only a pair of persons (Qian Zhengying and Zhang Guangdou) were in charge of the planning for the dam construction. Therefore, checking system did not work enough. Furthermore, it is said that a company related to a family of Li Peng, former Prime Minister, took over the dam construction, and a huge bribe was given to his family. Therefore, it is highly possible that the omission work was done.
The construction of the Three Gorges Dam began in 1993 and was completed in 2009. However, many cracks have been made on the dam since the completion, and it has been viewed with suspicion.
Incidentally, Google Earth captured a photo of the Three Gorges Dam last summer, and people raised the voices that its bank might be curved. Initially, the Chinese authorities made a strange excuse that the dam was designed to be curved. As a result, there was growing suspicion that the dam would collapse in the near future. Eventually, the authorities denied a rumor, saying that a photo by Google Earth were strange and the bank does not bend.
However, since this June, people have been saying again that the Three Gorges Dam is in dangerous condition, as recent heavy rains had flooded upstream Sichuan Province and Chongqing City and the water level of the Three Gorges Dam rose suddenly. On June 17, the power station at Danba County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province was flowed and mudflow also occurred. Besides, on 22 in the same month, the highest water level at Wucha, Qijiang, Jiangjin District in Chongqing City came up to as high as 205.56 m, 5.05 m higher than 200.51 m of control water level for flood prevention. As a result, a flood has hit Chongqing City and Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province on the same day.
Assume floodwaters that overflowed from Sichuan Province and Chongqing City flowed rapidly into the Three Gorges Dam downstream. If the dam collapses, a huge wave will hit the big cities of the Yangtze River basin, such as Wuhan, Nanjing, Shanghai, making hundreds of millions of people there suffer in a moment. At present, the word “上海将変海上 (Shanghai may turn into the sea)” is popular in China.
At the same time, sedimentation in the dam would also flow into the Yangtze River basin and severely damage industrial areas and granaries there. The Yangtze River basin with population of 350 million is said to occupy 25% of the arable land, 40% of the grain production, 33% of the cotton flower production and 66% of the freshwater fish production.
As is widely known, Japanese companies in such as Wuhan City have been severely damaged due to the supply chain being stopped in the new corona virus situation. Many Japanese companies should notice “China risk,” but some companies are said still to cling to China.
By the way, it is written in the above-mentioned “Exclusive Interview with Wang Weiluo” that Yang Lang, who is familiar with Chinese military, stated as follows. The economy at the Yangtze River basin occupies 40% of the whole Chinese economy. If the Three Gorges Dam collapses, 400 million people downstream will be affected.
If the Chinese army attacks Taiwan and the Three Gorges Dam collapses due to a counterattack from the Taiwan army, 90% of the Chinese paratroopers will be hit severely and the reserve army of the People’s Liberation Army will be ruined as well.
In case the Chinese army attacks the Taiwan army, the Taiwan side is likely to launch their intermediate-range missiles with a range of 1,500 km on the Three Gorges Dam. There is as short as 1,100 to 1,200 km from the Taiwan island to the dam. For that reason, Taiwan has been focusing on developing and deploying the intermediate-range missiles in recent years.
As mentioned above, the Three Gorges Dam is, for China, its “Achilles’ heel” during the war. Once the dam is broken down, the Beijing government will have no way to deal with it, and the end of the Chinese Communist Party will come.
